He credited "Tubthumping" with irresolute that, telling The Guardian, "It'southward not our most political or best song, merely it brought usa back together. The song is near united states – as a class and as a band. The beauty of it was we had no idea how big information technology would be."[six]

A Leeds pub called the Fforde Grene served equally the grouping'south inspiration for the song; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that information technology was written virtually "the resilience of ordinary people";[6] musically, "Tubthumping" is a dance-rock, culling rock, and trip the light fantastic toe-punk song in D major.[7] [8] [9] [ten] [11]
Critical reception [edit]
Larry Film from Billboard wrote, "Some records just demand attention: 'Tubthumping' is 1 of the rare few. Yous tin can spend three times the track's running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and assorted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-stone guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-style horns. Holding information technology all together are the kind of rousing, gang-like chants that yous hear at football games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, y'all won't soon forget this jam later first listen. And you'll probable exist hearing it on pop and modern rock stations for months to come. If this gem is indicative of the tone of the human action's forthcoming album, information technology should be quite a caput trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Tape described it as an "irritating tricky drinking anthem from the anarchist ring".[thirteen] Information technology was too called a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "Afterward a decade and a half spent equally indie heroes this commonage is likely to break into the mainstream in a big manner".[xv] Ian Hyland of the Sunday Mirror rated it eight out of x, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-up human pyramids on the dance floor in seconds. And y'all'll have a monster hitting – practiced work, chum."[16] Troy J. Augusto from Diverseness declared it as a "drinking-and-dancing anthem" and "the quirk hit of the flavour".[17]
In The Village Vocalization'southward Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the second-all-time single of the yr.[18] Australian radio station Triple J ranked it No. three in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the aforementioned year.[19] Author Bruce Pollock included it in his 2005 book "The 7,500 Most Important Songs of 1944-2000".[20] "Tubthumping" also placed at No. 12 in Rolling Stone 'due south 2007 list of the "twenty Well-nigh Annoying Songs"[21] and at No. 8 in the magazine's 2011 listing of the "Top 10 One-Hit Wonders of All Time".[22]
